Just close your eyes and let your imagination overwhelm your inner self.
To the strains of Arthur Russell’s “Place I know/ kid like you”(1986) and shot by the great rock star photographer Mick Rock, the launch of Gucci Cruise 2018 campaign drags us into an authentic Alessandro Michele’s psychedelic oneirism.
We are absorbed into a dreamlike dimension and ethereal figures, who are actually people from creative director’s world, enliven a contemplative and statuesque stillness, which slowly result in a hypnotic climax.
The choice of combining iconic personages from different cultural fields of italian landscape, including Francesco Bianconi (Baustelle frontman), Miriam Leone, Chiara Mastroianni, Alessandro Borghi, the renowned journalist Barbara Alberti with others belonging to the designer personal life, such as Sofia (Hang Zhou Restaurant owner) recalls that of Fellini’s ‘Amarcord’ imaginary and pays homage to a referential yet not nostalgic approach to Alessandro’s relation with fashion.
Reality blends with abstract visions and the baroque setting of an eternal Rome inspires the campaign’s name, Roman Rhapsody.
In this surreal tale lies Alessandro Michele’s core vision. He is narrating a story, yet is also showing us how past, present and future are tied together and necessary to the creative process.
